Relax and unwind with sharpies

Coloring is not just for kids anymore!  Coloring is a stress reliever for adults, it turns your brain off while opening up your creative side.  I find when I am focusing on a creative task all my stresses from work and life just hide somewhere in the background of my brain.  What a great feeling to turn all the noise off for a short time.  On the plus side you can color with your kids and it’s relaxing quality time together.

My kids actually prefer the adult-style coloring books to what is out there for kids.  Our favorites are the mandalas or other geometric designs.  I’ve actually framed up some of the mandalas I colored as art for the walls, they are beautiful, could be a frugal gift idea.

Here are some of our creations:

I colored this last one on the plane to Costa Rica.

Look at all the different varieties of books you can get:

My favorite coloring medium are pencil crayons, but you have to get decent quality ones.  I press quite hard with my pencil crayons to get that deep rich color, but often my hand gets tired before I’m ready to take a break.  We have this set:

Sharpies are an excellent choice for fast easy coloring, you can have a picture complete in one sitting.  The colors are just as bright as pencil crayons, but you can’t get a subtle soft look with sharpies.  We have this great sharpie set:

Here are some other options for great coloring mediums:

Whatever pictures you choose to color or whatever medium you use, just sit down and color once in a while.  It’s worth it to take a step away from the stresses of life and create a masterpiece with no previous skill required. Give it a try.

  1. I love this idea. It reminds me of the old “paint by numbers” kits I used to do as a hobby. Now that I think of it, it was very relaxing. I might have to give the sharpie/adult coloring book a try.

    1. Paint by numbers were awesome! Using Sharpies is much faster for a completed product and it’s always nice to sit down to do something and actually complete it in the same sitting. I would love to see your masterpieces when you give it a go.

  2. I love this post. My girls are huge fans of the adult coloring books. They use color pencils and gel pens, but I never thought about sharpies. I have a huge collection of them- for reasons unknown. lol.
