Psoriasis

My husband has unfortunately been blessed with a skin disorder called Psorasis.  It seems it’s becoming a more and more popular skin condition, we have met many many people who have it in varying degrees.  Basically your skin is trying to heal itself by creating new skin cells where it doesn’t need to therefore leaving these raised up rough patches of flakey white skin.  According to the doctors who we’ve talked to there are creams you can use, there are oral medications with some very unpleasant side effects, but basically they called it an autoimmune disease and there’s not much you can do about it, Ha!

I don’t believe that for one second!  I have read and read and read everything I could think of and believe I have diagnosed the reason my husband has it and what he can do to fight against it.

Back in 2007 my husband had back surgery, to be more specific he had herniated both his L4 and L5 discs and 75% of them were removed.  Following this surgery scar tissue built up causing spinal stenosis, which means that the scar tissue is putting pressure on the spinal cord.  He still has numbness down his left leg.  So what does this have to do with Psoriasis?  This is when his Psoriasis started and I’ll tell you why.

In my opinion Psoriasis is linked to what they call “leaky gut”.  And more specifically a small specific portion of the small intestine, at this location toxins are removed from the body, if the small intestine is weak and cannot properly remove these toxins, the body then uses it’s largest organ – the skin!  Back to why the back injury played a role in his diagnosis – the nerves that link to that specific section of the small intestine, therefore communicating with it on it’s role within the body, those nerves stem from the L4 L5 region of the spine!  I honestly believe that the damage/surgery/recovery created a domino effect which has caused the leaky gut and consequently the Psoriasis.  This is just my personal perception of all the facts out there, if you are curious to learn more about this I urge you to read John O. A. Pagano’s Healing Psoriasis:  The Natural Alternative.  He not only explains why the body has Psoriasis but how you can fight back.

My husband incorporated many of diet changes outlined in this book and his Psoriasis was almost gone.  Granted at this time it was summer here and we spent a lot of time in the ocean.  He believes the salt water really helped.  When I originally read this book I had borrowed it and now that his Psoriasis is back in full force (somehow travelling to Costa Rica made it worse, I haven’t figured that one out yet), I have purchased it from Amazon so that we can have it at home for a reference.  I will keep you updated on the progress.

Another thing we are trying to see if it can kick-start the healing process is activated charcoal.  Activated charcoal has been used to counter-act the toxins from poisonous snake bites, overdoses, etc.  It is powerful in it’s ability to eliminate toxins.  However, it is not a permanent solution, you can’t continuously take it or it will no longer be effective.  So to kick-start the healing process we are using activated charcoal two ways:

  1. Nature’s Way Activated Charcoal Oral Capsules – You are suppose to take them three times a day on an empty stomach, this doesn’t work well on my husband’s schedule so he will only be taking them twice a day, morning and night.
  2. Applying it topically.  I made a paste using coconut oil and activated charcoal powder and he is applying it to his psoriasis patches, leaving it on for about 20 minutes and washing it off.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with this disease I strongly urge you to buy the book, when I read it, it was like a light-bulb flicked on.  And if you do decide to follow the program he also has a cookbook!
